Play-Off paikka oli käytännössä selviö melkolailla jo ennen tiistain peliä, mutta viimeistään Fleetwood tappio varmisti sen, että Luton ja Barnsley nousevat suoraan Championshipiin.

Pudotuspelien vastustaja tulee olemaan joko Pompey, Charlton, Doncaster tai Peterborough. Niin tai näin, mutta kyllä  tässä kivinen tie on edessä, mikäli nousta aikoo.

Huomenna sitten Pompeyn kimppuun, play-offin ensimmäisessä osaottelussa.

Lähtökohtaisesti otteluparista voidaan odottaa todella tasaista ja tämä tullaan varmasti ratkaisemaan pienillä marginaaleilla. Kotijoukkue pääsee otteluun käytännössä parhaalla miehistöllään. Ottelu suorana Viasatilta huomenna klo 21.45.

Vaikka kotikentältä on takana 1-0 voitto, niin todella tiukasta tilanteesta lähdetään tähän otteluun ja kauden aiempi vierailu etelään ei ollut kovin kaukana farssista. Parhaalla miehistöllä lähdetään hakemaan paikkaa Wembleyn finaalista.

Sunderland AFC have completed the signing of Northern Ireland international Conor McLaughlin.

The 27-year-old free agent has signed a two-year deal and becomes Jack Ross’ first signing of the summer, arriving with a wealth of experience within the Football League.

Born in Belfast, the full-back has made 232 appearances in English football, with 132 of those coming in League One.

McLaughlin, who has 34 caps for Northern Ireland, began his career at Preston North End before a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town came at the start of 2012. Later that year, the right-sided defender joined Fleetwood Town and went on to enjoy five years at Highbury Stadium, making over 160 appearances.

A move to Millwall followed in 2017, with the Northern Ireland international making 32 league appearances during his two-year spell at The Den.

Speaking about the defender’s arrival, Sunderland manager, Jack Ross, said: “I am delighted to be able to bring Conor to the club. 

“He brings quality and experience to a position that was of high priority for us to have options in. I look forward to working with him over the course of the season.”

Burge joins Sunderland!

Sunderland AFC have completed the signing of goalkeeper Lee Burge.

The experienced stopper, who left Coventry City following the conclusion of the 2018-19 season, has signed a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

Burge, 26, spent 15 years with the Sky Blues, joining the club’s academy at the age of 11 before rising through the ranks and becoming a key first-team player.

Born in Hereford, the stopper made 160 appearances for Coventry, lifting the EFL Trophy in 2017 before returning to Wembley one season later and winning promotion via the League Two Play-Offs.

Speaking about his arrival, Burge said: “This is a club that can offer me everything I want, and the stature of the club is incredible.

“As a player, you want to train at the best facilities and play in the best stadiums, and this is by far the best place I have experienced.

“I just can’t wait to get going.”

SAFC manager, Jack Ross, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Lee to Sunderland AFC.

“It was an area we were looking to strengthen, and as you can see from his record, he boasts a wealth of experience within the Football League.

“Throughout the last 12 months we have worked hard to bring the right type of players to the club, and I’m sure Lee will fit seamlessly into the group.”

Pidemmän aikaa on ollut julkinen salaisuus, että Donald ja Methven ovat etsimässä uutta omistus- ja sijoitusryhmää seuralla. Nyt näyttää siltä, että se on löytynyt, eikä ainakaan lähtökohtaisesti tilanne vaikuta ollenkaan hassummalta.

Who are Sunderland’s new investors?

It might seem mental, but it’s true: Sunderland are in the process of being bought - in part, at least - by the men behind a multi-billionaire’s private investment firm.

John Phelan, Glen Fuhrman and Rob Platek are all senior partners at MSD Capital - the private investment firm of Michael Dell, the Founder and CEO of Dell Technologies. It’s interesting to note that Phelan and Fuhrman are billionaires in their own right - they aren’t just front men.

These are the four men behind the potential ‘takeover’ at Sunderland which will hopefully see them take up a majority stake in the club, alongside current owners Stewart Donald and Charlie Methven who will continue to manage the club on a day to day basis.

And it was Methven’s connection in US soccer that brought the foursome to the table, with the group seriously considering the possibility of taking ownership of a football club for some time.

Phelan, Fuhrman and Platek will - if it goes through - be controlling shareholders, three partners who will be supported by Michael Dell - who will also be an equity investor and will also take a shareholding.

Whilst Dell won’t be especially hands on, him being a significant shareholder indicates that financially he will be just as involved as his business partners.

And whilst this isn’t necessarily the work of MSD Capital per se, it’s interesting to note that it’s stated on their website, “MSD Capital is a private investment firm established in 1998 to exclusively manage the assets of Michael Dell and his family. MSD Capital engages in a broad range of investment activities and has the flexibility to invest in a wide variety of asset classes.”

Essentially, the firm who these men belong to invest in companies that they believe can be successful through “experienced investment, risk management and infrastructure personnel with extensive depth and breadth across asset classes.”

Phelan, Fuhrman, Platek and Dell will, all going well, invest in the club for the long-term and the money behind them will allow them to play a long game here. Furthermore, their global network and team of investors will stand the club in good stead moving forward.

Taloudellisesti olisi huikean vahva omistuspohja, joka antaisi mahdollisuuden seuralle siirtyä seuraavalle tasolle ja toisi vakautta pidemmälläkin aikavälillä. Samaan aikaan Donald ja Methven jäisivät kuitenkin seuraan töihin. Nyt eletään todella mielenkiintoisia aikoja tulevaisuuden kannalta.

Sunderland AFC are delighted to announce the signing of defender Joel Lynch!

The 31-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year deal at the Stadium of Light, becoming Jack Ross' sixth signing of the summer.

Lynch, who was available on a free transfer after leaving Queens Park Rangers at the end of last season, arrives on Wearside with a wealth of experience having previously represented Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town.

The defender has made over 200 appearances at Championship level after initially starting his career on the south coast at Brighton in League One.

Speaking about joining Sunderland, Lynch said: "I’ve known about the deal for a week or so and I’m just delighted to get it all done now.

“I travelled up on Sunday and looked around the place today. It’s an amazing club and I’m just excited to get going because it has everything you need to succeed.”

Jack Ross added: "Joel is an experienced defender with a lot of know-how. He has played the bulk of his career in the Championship and will bring a lot of physicality and strength to our squad.

“It is important to have those attributes as a defender and that was why we wanted to bring him to the club.

“He had interest from elsewhere so we had to patient in getting this deal done, but we feel as though we’ve got someone who will strengthen our squad which is important.”
