Aiden McGeady loppukauden lainalla Charltoniin. Mies on joutunut käytöksensä vuoksi Parkinsonin koirankoppiin, joten siirto oli odotettu.

Jim Rodwell appointed as CEO!

Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce Jim Rodwell as the club’s new Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect.

Rodwell, who is a former Board Director at the Football Association and the EFL, arrives from Scunthorpe United after spending five years as CEO at Glanford Park.

Also a former player and Chairman, SAFC has appointed someone with vast experience who has performed almost every key role within a club.

This experience, coupled with his undoubted knowledge, passion and connections, will be a huge asset and made him the natural choice as the club continues to progress.

After being appointed, Rodwell said: “I'm honoured and delighted to be joining a club of the stature and pedigree of Sunderland AFC. From my very first meeting with the Chairman, I was sold on his enthusiasm and passion for the club. I'll be counting down the days until I can get started at the stadium and academy to do all I can to drive this great club forward. I would also like to pay thanks to the Swann family for the last five years and for being so understanding in allowing me to join SAFC.”

Whilst the club remains for sale, there is understandably increased uncertainty within global markets and the economy as a whole due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Board’s priority is to ensure that we are well equipped and in the best possible condition to ensure ongoing and long-term success. The appointment of a CEO is seen as integral to these plans and we are delighted that Jim has joined SAFC.

Näin kuvan ja luulin tekstiä lukematta silti näin ja ihmettelin lähinnä miten Jack Rodwell on ihan eri näköinen kuin ennen.

Valitettavasti ei taida tulla jatkoa, ilmeisesti eivät olleet enää kuluvalle kaudella kuvaamassa. Methven  vaikuttaa doerilta.

Tällä kaudella ei ole kuvattu, eikä aktiivisissa suunnitelmissa ole kolmatta kautta, mutta viikko sitten annetussa haastattelussa Leo Perlman kyllä jätti kivasti auki sen, että jossain vaiheessa saatetaan asiaan palata.

Kaksi ensimmäistä kautta ovat olleet kuitenkin melkoisia menestyksiä ympäri maailman, joten hassua olisi kokonaan sulkea pois tulevaisuuden suunnitelmista tässä vaiheessa. Tuotantoyhtiön perustivat neljä lapsuudenkaveria ja täysveristä Sunderland kannattajaa, kuten nimikin (Fulwell 73), kertoo, joten asia on läheinen joka tapauksessa heille koko ajan. CLUB STATEMENT: Rodwell issues update

Chief Executive Officer Jim Rodwell today issued the following statement on behalf of Sunderland AFC to update supporters and stakeholders on club’s position with regards to the completion of the 2019-20 season.

From the moment the campaign was suspended in March, the EFL board has stated that any remaining fixtures should be played once it is safe and practical to do so, thus retaining the integrity of the competition.

There was a time when that looked like it would not be possible, but recent developments have ensured that the season can be completed within the initial timeframe set by the EFL.

Several League One clubs have taken the stance that no further games should be played, and that a currently undetermined formula should be applied to finalise the league table.

SAFC strongly disagree with this view and remain committed to completing the season the right way.

We believe that any league placings should be determined by what happens on the pitch, not in a meeting room and most certainly not in a courtroom.

As a club, we entered the league to determine the best team over 46 games, not 37. That is the premise with which season cards, player contracts and partnerships are agreed.

It is unfortunate that supporters are extremely unlikely to be able to attend our remaining fixtures, but the streaming infrastructure in place at all EFL clubs ensures that we are in a position to fulfil any obligations, both moral and contractual, to our stakeholders.

Like all League One clubs, we therefore have a duty to do so.

We are committed to streaming our remaining home matches for free to all season card holders and this would be extended should the 2020-21 season start behind closed doors.

Fulfilling our remaining fixtures will come at considerable cost, but it sets a deeply concerning precedent for professional football clubs to decide against completing competitions they have entered because they don’t feel like doing so.

Neither fixtures being suspended for public health reasons or matches being played behind closed doors are novel scenarios, but both have happened in the past without clubs opting against fulfilling fixtures and altering competition rules.

The framework for next season is yet to be determined and all clubs will be in a position to contribute to what is put in place, but this season’s rules and regulations are set in stone and all clubs agreed to them before a ball was kicked.

We are determined to ensure players, staff and supporters are afforded the opportunity to see the hard work, sacrifice and loyalty of the past nine months rewarded.

The EFL is a professional league and it now needs to demonstrate the professionalism and obligation that comes with its historic status.

Vaikka tässä topicissa on ollut hiljaiseloa kauden päätteeksi, on kuliseissa reippaasti sutinaa.

Ensinnäkin rekrypuolelta fudutettiin herrat Tony Coton ja Richard Hill. Myös akatemiajohtaja Paul Reid sai lähteä seurasta.

Pelaajapuolella on myös ovi käynyt ja esim. ykkösmaalivahti Jon McLaughlin siirtyi Rangersiin. Tom Flanaganille saatiin sentään jatko sorvattua.

Omistajapuolella kuitenkin mennään kaikista kiivaimmin. Stewart Donald on aktiiivisesti edelleen myymässä seuraa ja on astunut alas jo hallituksen puheenjohtajan paikalta. Uusista omistajakandidaateista esiin julkisesti on ainakin astunut seuralegenda Mickey Gray joukkoineen, kuten myös energiajuomajätin, Rich Energyn omistaja William Storey.

Toiveissa onkin, että uusi omistuspohja löytyy elokuun loppuun mennessä ja kaikki olisi tähän mennessä viimeistelty. Pyyntihinta seurasta on tällä hetkellä kolmekymmentäseitsemän miljoonaa puntaa.

O'Brien signs for Sunderland!

Sunderland AFC are delighted to announce the signing of Aiden O’Brien.

The 26-year-old striker becomes Phil Parkinson’s first new recruit ahead of the 2020-21 season, moving to Wearside on a two-year deal after leaving Millwall in June following a nine-year stay in South East London.

O’Brien scored 15 goals for the Lions as they earned promotion to the second tier in 2017, while also racking up over 100 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship during his time at the Den.

The striker’s form in the capital also led to international recognition with the Republic of Ireland, with O’Brien scoring one goal in his four appearances to date.

Prior to breaking into Millwall’s first-team, the 26-year-old enjoyed loan spells with Staines Town, Hayes and Yeading United, Crawley Town, Aldershot Town and Torquay United.

After sealing a move to the Stadium of Light, O’Brien said: “It feels terrific to be a Sunderland player. This is a massive club and I just can’t wait to get going. I love scoring goals, it’s what I live for and hopefully I can bring plenty to the team. I can’t express how excited I am, and I can’t wait to show the fans and my team-mates what I’m made of.”

Manager Phil Parkinson added: “I’m really pleased with the signing of Aiden. He’s at a good age, he has experience of winning this division and he has played plenty of Championship football. Aiden can also play in a variety of attacking roles, which I feel is important for us. We are delighted to welcome him to the club and we are looking forward to working with him.”

BAILEY'S BACK!

Sunderland AFC are delighted to announce the signing of Bailey Wright.

The Australian defender, who impressed throughout a loan spell at the Stadium of Light last season, returns to Wearside on a two-year deal.

Wright becomes Phil Parkinson’s second signing ahead of the 2020-21 campaign, moving to the North East on a permanent deal after his three-year stay at Bristol City ended last month.

Following his arrival, the Black Cats kept five clean sheets in six games with Wright at the heart of the defence before an ankle injury, and the coronavirus pandemic, brought a premature end to the campaign.

The 28-year-old has a wealth of experience under his belt, having made almost 300 appearances in English football, as well as earning 24 caps for Australia.

Wright gained promotion to the Sky Bet Championship during his eight-year stint with Preston North End, and following his move to Bristol City in 2017, he was named as the Robins’ club captain.

After returning to the Stadium of Light, Wright said: “It feels really good to get the deal done and I just can’t wait to get up to the North East and join the squad. Although I only worked with the manager for a short spell, I really enjoyed the structure and discipline of the team. He expects his players to give everything on the pitch and be good people, and we have that culture within the dressing room. We are heading in the right direction and I’m very confident we can achieve our ambitions next season.”

Manager Phil Parkinson added: “I’m delighted to have signed Bailey. He’s a very good player, but he’s also an excellent character and leader. He’s a really important signing for us and because of his quality, there was plenty of competition for his signature, so I’d like to credit the owner and Jim Rodwell for getting the deal over the line.”

2020-21 Nike home kit unveiled

Sunderland AFC’s new home kit has been unveiled ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Manufactured by Nike, the new-look home shirt features the Lads’ traditional red and white stripes on the front and back, with the Nike swoosh and club crest sitting side by side for the first time since 2004.

Paired with black shorts and red socks, the bespoke home shirt also proudly displays the logo of Great Annual Savings, the club’s new principle partner.

The logos of the Utilita and Eleven Sports Media will also feature on the back of the first-team shirt and the back of the shorts respectively, while the wording ‘HA’WAY THE LADS’ is printed inside the back of the neck.

SAFC’s partnership with Nike is rooted in the North East, with approved Pro Club partner Just Sport Pro Club servicing the agreement between the club and the sportswear giant, who have had UK-based offices in Sunderland since 1982.

Priced at £50 for adults and £40 for juniors, the new home kit will be available to purchase via the SAFC Online Store only from Monday 10 August.

Supporters are reminded that the Stadium of Light store remains closed to the public at this time.
