Salerno was the last stop on the journey. When visiting a fan shop, they got into a conversation with the owner and after one or two coffees it was agreed to meet at the match against Hellas Verona in front of the stadium.
The meeting worked and it was said, "Come on, let me introduce you to a few people" - these were then members of the leading group "Nuova Guardia". It developed a nice conversation, many of the Italians knew Schalke through the games against Inter and AC Milan. This was followed by an offer that our people could not refuse - to follow the game in the heart of the Curva Sud Siberiano directly at the Vorsängerpodest.
What happened then?
They exchanged the contact details and got the offer, like to come over again. The contact has certainly made it easier for a Nuova Guardia member to live in Darmstadt and speak German perfectly. Already in October 2016 the second visit to Salerno followed, to a game with Benevento Calcio, this time with a larger group of seven people. This weekend, the Nuova Guardia celebrated its 26th birthday and our representatives attended the anniversary dinner.
It was easy to notice in all the conversations and celebrations together that it fits like a fist on the eye. In November 2016, then followed the first return visit, as 12 Italians were home game against Darmstadt 98 on Schalke. For the first time, the flag of the Nuova Guardia hung in the north curve.
What is special about the friendship with the fans from Salerno?
Italy is the motherland of the Ultras, the Curva Sud Siberiano looks back on more than 40 years of ultra-culture. Although the club played only twice in Serie A and could not celebrate any great success, the Curva Sud is still considered one of the best corners of the country, also in terms of choreography. Even when looking through chunks of fanzines as a teenager, Salernitana's were always impressive.
When you're there, the feeling is hard to describe. You can feel the magic of the curve, every single group had and has its meaning. The complete curve is ultra. The lead singer in the upper rank is around 60 years old. He is standing there on the balustrade and has been doing so for 40 years, it is just incredibly impressive and formative.
In addition, the city is located at the end of the Amalfi Coast. From the upper tier of the stadium you look directly at the sea, which is for a Ruhrpottler simply a completely different attitude to life. The hospitality of the people there is hard to put into words. All fans of Salernitana, all in the city, are proud of the contact with us. So the friendship for both sides is in some ways an honor: For us with a big historical curve, for you with one of the largest clubs in Europe.
What's next, what's next?
First looked far ahead: In June 2019 US Salernitana celebrates its 100th anniversary. This is celebrated big, there is certainly a procession through the city and a fireworks display on the beach promenade. Apart from that, we have to wait and see what the game plan has to offer. Unfortunately, the games in Serie B are often scheduled one and a half weeks in advance, and there are also several English weeks on the 42 match days. And of course it would be a celebration for our friends if Schalke played in the Champions League against their biggest rival, SSC Napoli.
