Pace and patience must defeat the Finnish bulwark
Kasper Hjulmand expects defensive fins in the Park. Similar challenges await in the EC qualification.
The game must be quick when the Danish national football team opens the EC qualification on Thursday evening with a home match against Finland in Parken.
A high tempo is a necessity if Finland's hard-working and well-structured defense is to be unbalanced, believes national coach Kasper Hjulmand.
The Finns agree that an iron-fisted defense and successful counter-attacks are their best chance for success, the national coach points out.
- Finland is a very defined football team, which has played in a certain way for a long time. They work stinking hard and have a fantastic work ethic. They have a defensive mindset to defend every centimeter on the pitch.
- They are well organized and live on counterattacks, and that is always dangerous. We know that it is one of the most difficult things in football to face this type of team, and we have had difficult matches against this type of opponent before, so we must take the task very seriously.
- Patience, power and our own breakthrough power will be decisive for success. We must maintain the pressure on them at a high pace, and we must be very aggressive in our pressing game, says Kasper Hjulmand.
And it is hardly just the Finns who have a basic plan to defend themselves successfully against Denmark. Hjulmand also expects the other teams in the EC qualification group to have that as well.
Neither Northern Ireland, Slovenia, Kazakhstan nor San Marino immediately have the quality or the individualists to match Denmark in an open exchange of blows.
- There are other tasks than playing against Croatia, France and England. We will be playing against organized, defensive teams, where it will be up to us to get the pace of the game, break them down and create breakthroughs.
- We have had problems with these kinds of matches before - twice against the Faroe Islands and most recently against Australia for the World Cup. The most difficult thing in football is to break down such teams, because it requires a lot of simultaneous movements or some individualists, which can create imbalance, says Kasper Hjulmand.
For the past three days, the national team has therefore trained in patterns that can open up compact defences.
- When we finish the ten qualifying games, I think we have had the ball 60-70 percent of the time against very structured defenses.
- It is very difficult to meet someone who is in good shape, works hard and knows what they are doing when they stand low and
close space in a 5-3-2 formation, says Hjulmand.
The match against Finland starts at 20:45.
