After watching his captain Claudio Reyna limp off after 15 minutes, United States coach Bruce Arena's woes were compounded when his side conceded a late goal to lose out to Morocco in Tuesday night's friendly.
The game, played before nearly 26,000 fans in Nashville, Tennessee, marked the first time in 2006 that Arena has had a full-strength squad at his disposal. And while it will have been heartening for the coach to see John O'Brien complete a productive and pain-free 45 minutes, the 1-0 loss and the knock picked up by team leader Reyna will have left fingernails shorter than normal in the technical area.

The opening 20 minutes were defined largely by a lack of fluidity from the finals-bound home side as they struggled to come to grips with the high-tempo play of the Moroccans. To make matters worse for the US, just ten minutes in, captain Reyna began to show signs of a recurrence of an old hamstring injury.


After trying to soldier on and stretch the pain away, the Manchester City player and FIFA World Cup™ veteran limped off and was replaced by Pablo Mastroeni. Arena now faces a nervous wait to see if his central midfield maestro will be fit for the team's Germany 2006 opener against the Czech Republic on 12 June.

The first shot of the game did not arrive until the 22nd minute, when 21-year-old Hicham Mahdoufi skinned Steve Cherundolo down the left side and unleashed a low drive from just outside the box. The shot skipped just past Kasey Keller's far post, acting as a wake-up call for the sluggish-looking Americans.

On 25 minutes the USA got their first chance as Brian McBride got on the end of a fine bit of approach work from DaMarcus Beasley, but he could only scuff his right-footed shot wide from 20 yards out.
 
As the hosts slowly began to find their rhythm they saw their best opportunity go begging in the 27th minute when O'Brien's devilish chip over the top picked out stand-in captain Landon Donovan racing into the box. But to a groan from the crowd, the LA Galaxy playmaker could only poke tamely wide of the post.
The Americans signalled their intent at the start of the second half, pulling a man out of the back to bolster their forays forward. After 52 minutes another great lay-off from the ever-lively Beasley found Bobby Convey, a half-time replacement for O'Brien. However, the Reading man's right-footed screamer from distance failed to sneak past Tarek El Jarmouni, who pulled off a decent save.

At the other end, just seconds later the north Africans threatened as Charlton Athletic's Talal El Karkouri rose to meet a fine cross. But his free header slipped just past the far post to keep the scoreline blank.

Late fireworks
Josh Wolff, Donovan and second-half substitute Eddie Johnson all went close to scoring as the clock ticked down but an error from Steve Cherundolo – who dallied on the ball in a dangerous position – saw him stripped of possession by Bouchaib El Moubarki. The substitute quickly picked out fellow late replacement Mohamed Madihi racing in on goal.

The striker made no mistake as he ghosted past his man and slammed over the sprawling Keller – who had been called into action precious few times on the night – to seal victory at the death.

The Americans will now need to dust themselves off as they head into their last two pre-finals warm-up games. They take on Venezuela on Friday in Cleveland before playing their final match against Latvia in East Hartford, Connecticut on 28 May.

The USA begin their Germany 2006 account against the Czech Republic in Gelsenkirchen in the powerful Group E that also contains Italy and African first-timers Ghana.

Jännä nähdä miten Ghana pärjää Essienin johdolla. Uskon, että USA:lla ei ole mahdollisuuksia Ghanaa vastaan, mutta Italia ja Tsekki ovat Ghanan yläpuolella. Tsekin ja Italian kohtaaminen on varmasti mielenkiintoinen ja Italia haluaa varmasti menestyä. Muistot Etelä-Koreaa vastaan ovat varmasti vielä hyvin takaraivossa ja olisiko Italia tänä vuonna kolmen joukossa? Itse sitä en toivo, koska Italia ei todellakaan kuulu lempijoukkueisiini, mutta uskon, että se voittaa kuitenkin Tsekin alkulohkossa. Varmasti Tonia seurataan paljon ja mies voisi saada paljon onnistumisiakin. Gilardinon en usko pelaavan hirveän paljon, mutta miten on Totin laita? Eikö mies ole loukkaantunut ja milloin odotellaan olevan pelikunnossa?
