A YOUNG football coach has ‘bridged’ the gap to becoming a top gaffer by completing the same coaching course as Chelsea legend Jose Mourinho.
Kristian Heames (32) has been awarded the UEFA ‘A’ licence from the Scottish Football Association – making him one of only 1,300 coaches in the world with the prestigious badge.
The same course has glittering alumni including current Real Madrid manager Mourinho and the man who now sits in the Stamford Bridge hot-seat, Andre Villas-Boas.
Kristian is putting the degree to good use by training youngsters at his Football Development School (FDS), which is based in Stamford and is a feeder system for Premier League club West Bromich Albion.
He hopes to one day follow the footsteps of Chelsea’s two Portugese managers and coach at a professional level.
Kristian said: “My dream is to manage a professional team, but at the moment I am busy coaching young people.
“I am really pleased with the licence and know this will be a massive benefit in the way that young players attending FDS academies, development schools and sessions are taught.
“They will now be given similar guidance and training skills that both Jose and Andre give to their squads and hopefully they will be able to achieve their potential.”
The FDS is one of the most successful football schools in the country and has provided around 15 players for the Peterborough United academy team.
They have also produced players for MK Dons, Northampton Town and West Brom.
To pass his ‘A’ licence, Kristian had to travel up to Largs, 30 miles of west of Glasgow, every four months to take part in workshops and give feedback on his coaching sessions in Stamford.
Also on the course were former Premiership professional footballers Gary McAllister, Lee Carsley and Alex Rae.
Kristian added: “It was great to interract with ex-pros and seeing them play really helped me with my coaching.
“They were still very good players, but the most important thing is they were so reliable, they would make pass after pass after pass.”
The prestigious UEFA licence means Kristian is qualified to take training sessions for professional football teams.
It is the highest football coaching qualification in the world, but to move from the training ground to professional management in the dugout, Kristian would still have to complete his ‘Pro’ licence.
That takes at least a year and encompasses 180 hours, but UEFA guidelines suggest that coaches should have a further year’s experience before progressing to the qualification.

We're withya Kris!
