"For me, Christmas is actually a time to be together with family and friends," says Diogo Tomas, who is back in the country that symbolizes Santa Claus. In the town of Tampere, where the ADO player grew up with a Portuguese father and Finnish mother, the Tomas family has been reunited.

Diogo jokingly tells how he will undoubtedly give his three-year-older brother Fausto a 'brotherly' slap this Christmas. The easy-going manner and relaxed attitude with which the four-time Finland international tells his story is typical of the cult figure. He exudes relaxation; a key concept in his atypical football life.

Feeding birds

'Reading, playing the piano or walking in nature', he lists. 'My area of ​​interest is quite broad. I think it is important to enjoy myself. And that can mainly be done by just doing what I feel like doing. I sometimes try to feed the birds that flutter around me every morning. At the moment, Diogo Tomas is staying in a snow-white environment. The green ring-necked parakeets or herring gulls that visit his garden every day have been replaced by a thick layer of snow. Stretched out in the sauna and enjoying a few beers, it is time for Tomas to relax even more.

'My father, mother and brother all have quite busy lives', says Tomas. 'The Christmas holidays are the time to finally catch up. We do that after my mother has cooked or while we watch a nice Christmas movie. But sitting still during the holidays? No, that is really not possible. That is also why I practice yoga or pilates a lot.'

Tomas was a surprise from the hat of technical director Joris Mathijsen in September. The 27-year-old defender came over from HJK Helsinki, with whom he reached European football. The choice for the second football level of the Netherlands was therefore purely based on feeling.

Heart on the tongue

"The club felt good," explains the Finn, who has now found his feet in the Netherlands. The energy of the stands and fanatical supporters ensure that Tomas notices that ADO is close to the hearts of the fans.

In the Netherlands, people are open-minded , he thinks. 'Although they do wear their heart on their sleeve, which is also the case with me. But I think it is important that all different types of personalities are given their due.'

Tomas, for example, is very good at expressing himself, but emphasizes that it is not at all bad if a footballer is a bit more reserved, such as in interviews. 'That should also be completely fine.'

The fact that he, in contrast to his compatriot Juho Kilo for example , is so expressive and outspoken, he himself explains by his Southern European roots . A romantic love story ensured that his father, who was used to the sun, moved to the high and above all cold north.

Playing football indoors

'He met my mother during a study exchange', says Diogo Tomas. But it didn't stop at just one study project. 'My father kept putting in extra effort, although of course he had long since stopped focusing on his studies', he says laughing. 'Eventually he moved to Tampere, with two little boys as a result.'

Besides the sometimes frozen Finnish artificial grass pitches, Tomas also played football indoors in his youth. 'I had a carefree youth', he looks back on his childhood. 'Maybe I was also lucky that I was never in the spotlight until I was eighteen.'

'Others sometimes have a million followers when they're 15,' he gives as an example. 'That was absolutely not the case for me. I grew up in a safe environment.'

Despite the fact that Diogo Tomas was never considered the great Finnish top talent, he has become indispensable on the Hague pitch. Since his arrival in the Hofstad last summer, he has not missed a match and has become one of the leaders in the Hague team.

'In the beginning it was a bit of a trial and error with everyone, but I'm quite flexible as a person', he describes his own character. 'Of course it takes time to settle in a new country with a new culture, but everyone at the club is incredibly helpful. Just think of showing you around when shopping.'
Tomas was lucky that The Hague was not completely foreign to him. In fact, with a brother who had temporarily lived in the Netherlands a few years ago, it was clear who he should seek advice from for his choice.

At home in Tampere

'He was immediately enthusiastic.' Tomas immediately starts beaming when he tells how his brother played a key role in his choice. 'You have so much beautiful nature here with beautiful parks. I think small, narrow paths through the gardens are fantastic. You can really relax there. I also showed it to my family when they came here a while ago.'

In the coming days, Tomas will be reunited with his loved ones by the Finnish fireplace. Because no matter how much he likes it in The Hague, Tampere is and will remain his home. 'It's actually impossible to express in words, but the feeling in Tampere... It's something special.'
