I'm planning a post for my blog about Finnish football language.

I've got as far as 'RAUHA!' and of course the 'Suomi on ihana chant', both of which have English equivalents that aren't quite as eloquent.

So, any more for any more? Anything that shows the Finnish mentality...

NAATISKELU (nauttia, nauttiminen) = to enjoy playing football.

The aim in the football game should not be to shoot at once but to pass the ball as long as the beautiful goal could be made.

Ancient Savolax way to play football. Kind of a cliché, but in the 70´s the term appeared in a KuPS club song (1975) sung by the supporters in the matches. The lyrics were written by Jukka Virtanen:

"Elä laakase, naatitaan.
Käy peli taas anna kunnolla tänne vaan.
Elä laakase, naatitaan.
Tuas yht'aikoo kohta myö laakastaan."

I have no idea was the saying “Elä laakase, naatitaan” used earlier, but the origins of it may come from the literature. The famous Finnish writer Veijo Meri had used it in his play (in a little different “game”) and Jukka Virtanen may have remembered the saying from Meri´s play.

The saying ended up to be the name of the book of Kuopio´s football history, “Elä laakase, naatitaan” by Antti O. Arponen (1984).
