Transfer deadline to be extended

The Premier League has confirmed the first transfer deadline of the season has been extended until 1 September.

The window is scheduled to close 24 hours earlier but, following normal league guidelines, it has been put back because August 31 falls on a Sunday.

The move has been agreed between the Premier League, Football League and Football Association.

Once the deadline passes, teams will then have to wait until January 2009 to sign players from other clubs.

When my leg was broken in an horrific tackle by Lucas Neill in September 2003, my mates were ready to hunt him down if I gave the go-ahead.

A few weeks later I received a phone call. "You won't believe this, Jay. We're in the Trafford Centre and Lucas Neill is walking straight towards us. What do you reckon?"

Did I really want Neill to take a crack? "There's only one problem," added the voice. "Little Davey Thommo is with him."

That was that. I could hardly let one of my best mates, David Thompson, now a Blackburn player, become a witness to an assault. Besides he'd have recognised the attackers. The impromptu mission was aborted and I sent a text to Thommo telling him Neill should give him a hug of thanks.

As word got back to Blackburn about the near miss, or should that be hit, their coach Terry Darracott, a Scouser, appealed to one of my friends to call the boys off. I agreed.

Styles on the brink of quitting after FA rescind red card for Beye

Controversial referee Rob Styles has been pushed to the brink of quitting as a Barclays Premier League referee after the FA on Thursday overturned Habib Beye's red card at St James' Park on Monday night.

The Newcastle defender was dismissed for a professional foul on Manchester City's Robinho and Styles, one of the League's most experienced officials, refused to rescind the red card despite a plea by Newcastle interim manager Joe Kinnear.

But Newcastle appealed to the FA disciplinary committee who backed the Newcastle full back and he is free to play in Saturday's derby at Sunderland.

A friend of Styles said: 'Not only is Rob a top referee but in order to officiate at the top you need a great deal of resolve. He has had good support from his family and friends and that is what is keeping him in the game at the moment.

'But nobody would be surprised if that situation was to change because despite his love for the game there is only so much he can take.'

Styles received hate mail as a result of the Robinho incident and a similar one at Old Trafford last month in which he wrongly awarded a penalty against Bolton and later apologised.

He will be the fourth official for Sunday's game between Chelsea and Liverpool and will not take charge of a top-flight match this weekend.

He was at a meeting of fellow referees in Warwick on Tuesday after rejecting Kinnear's appeal and he was given the support of other officials who said they would have made the same call. However, his management and decision-making in the match was criticised by the assessor.

Although Styles finds himself in emotional turmoil after the FA's decision, it has delighted Kinnear. The Newcastle manager, who confirmed captain Michael Owen is out of the 140th Tyne-Wear derby with a groin strain, said: 'That is one problem out of the way. That is fantastic news. I would have thought that is a victory for common sense and that is what I said to the referee.

'I did not lose my head with him. I said: "You will be surprised when you see the replay." One thing I thought at the time was that he was in a horrible position to call it as he did. Freeze the frame and he has two players in his view and he is craning his neck from behind to see it.

'There were two issues. The tackle, which was made just outside the box and carried into the box, and it was a long way to make the call a penalty.'

Beye said: 'It was a bad decision but I can understand because he is human and when you are human you make mistakes. I got the ball and I could not believe it when he gave the penalty and the red card. You know as a defender when you have made the tackle and when I made that tackle I was 100 per cent confident I got the ball.

'I am glad I can play against Sunderland because games like this are why you are a footballer.'

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has called for a two-division Premier League to increase competition.

"It is time to look at two Premier Leagues - Premier League One and Premier League Two," said Gartside, who wants 18 clubs in each division.

"You could have 36 Premier League clubs split into 18 and 18 and that would also solve the problems of the winter break and supporting the England team," he said.

"I don't have the answers but it is certainly time for a debate - perhaps even on not having relegation from a second division of the Premier League."

Tottenham muuttaa naapuriin

Tottenham aikoo rakentaa uuden stadionin White Hart Lanen viereen.

Lontoolainen jalkapalloseura Tottenham vahvisti torstaina aikeensa rakentaa uusi, 60 000 katsojaa vetävä stadion nykyisen kotikenttänsä White Hart Lanen naapuriin. Tottenham kertoi torstaina myös nettotulojensa pienentyneen, mutta tuo ei stadionhanketta estä.

Tottenham on asuttanut White Hart Lanea vuodesta 1899. Stadionille mahtuu 36 000 katsojaa. Kapasiteetti rajoittaa Tottenhamin tuloja, sillä perinteikkäällä seuralla on 22 000 ihmistä jonossa kausilippua varten ja noin 70 000 jäsentä. Moisilla eväillä täyttynee isompikin stadion.

Sen on määrä nousta White Hart Lanen viereiselle teollisuusalueelle. Rakentamisen aikataulu on vielä auki, ja ensin suunnitelma menee yleisön näytteille ja kommentoitavaksi marraskuussa. Tottenham aikoo pelata White Hart Lanella kunnes uusi stadion on valmis.

Bennett on yksi Englannin arvostetuimpia tuomareita. Hän kertoo, että missään muussa ammatissa ei saa osakseen samanlaista nöyryytystä ja solvausta, kuin tuomarina.

- Kentän ulkopuolella pääosa ihmisista ei missään tilanteessa käyttäisi niin hyökkäävää kieltä toista ihmistä kohtaan, Bennet kertoo Daily Mirrorissa.

Englannin jalkapalloliitolla FA:lla on tällä hetkellä menossa kampanja kunnioituksen lisääntymisen puolesta kentillä.

Didier Drogballe huimat sakot kolikonheitosta katsomoon

Chelsean hyökkääjä Didier Drogba joutuu rikostutkintaan. Lisäksi hän saa pelikieltoa sekä hurjat 160000 punnan eli 182500 euron sakot Englannin jalkapalloliitolta kolikonheitosta katsomoon liigacupin ottelussa Burnleyta vastaan.

Englannin jalkapalloliitto eli FA antaa asiasta lausunnon tänään.

- Liitto ja poliisit päättävät mitä päättävät. Me hyväksymme kaikki annetut rangaistukset, sanoo Chelsean päävalmentaja Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Burnleyn kannattaja teki eilen rikosilmoituksen Drogban tempusta. Norsunluurannikon maajoukkuetähti näytti ensin keskisormea Burnleyn faneille. Tämän jälkeen hän heitti kannattajan heittämän rahan takaisin katsomoon.

- Tutkimme kyseistä välikohtausta, Lontoon Metropolitan-poliisin edustaja vahvisti.

Se takaisin heitetty kolikko voi osua ihan kehen tahansa, ei siihen joka kolikon kentälle heitti. Ei maksavan asiakkaan pidä kokea jalkapallo-ottelussa riskiä saada kolikosta päähänsä. Drogbalta meni noin kahden viikon palkka ja muutama ottelu jäänee väliin. Jos kolikoita katsomosta heittelevät saadaan kiinni, ovat rangaistukset varmasti kovemmat kuin kahden viikon palkka ja varmaan vähän useampikin ottelu jää väliin. Mitään oikeutta katsojilla ei ole tavaraa kentälle viskoa, mutta ei myöskään pelaajilla ole mitään oikeutta siihen vastata. Onko se typerämpi joka aloittaa vai joka jatkaa? Ayegbeni Yakubu jäi viime kaudella pariksi ylimääräiseksi päiväksi Nigeriaan maaottelun yhteydessä, Everton pidätti kahden viikon palkan. Elano avautui Mark Hughesille äskettäin jouduttuaan istumaan koko ottelun vaihtopenkillä, City pidätti viikon palkan. Drogba selvisi lopulta aika vähällä.
